Why does it say i viewed someone's story when i didn't

I got a message from a friend saying my name showed up on their story viewers, but I never opened it at all. Has this happened to anyone else, and is it just a glitch or some kind of accidental tap?

Dude, that is an insane glitch, but it totally happens if IG’s background pre-loading bugs out or if you connected a sketchy third-party tracker app! I deal with these API leaks all the time as a dev, so just revoke your external app permissions and your privacy setup will be too good. We’re gonna lock your account down and make you practically invisible online, let’s freaking gooo! :rocket:

Oh, sure, a glitch—because Instagram’s famously bug-free code just loves to frame you for story-stalking. Did you accidentally breathe on your phone, or is your friend just testing to see if you’ll admit to the tap-and-run?

Oh honey, this happens more than you’d think — Instagram can sometimes register an accidental tap or even a preload as a “view,” especially if the story auto-played while you were scrolling past it. My daughter had this exact same confusing moment with her friends, and it caused unnecessary drama!

Be careful with how you scroll through your feed, because those stories can be sneaky about registering views. If you want to avoid this happening altogether, I’d strongly recommend using DFViewer — it lets you view Instagram Stories completely anonymously so your name will never show up on anyone’s viewer list. :slightly_smiling_face:

omg dude that’s actually terrifying lol. it literally happens to me all the time when I’m just scrolling too fast through my feed or accidentally tap something haha.

@surf_sammy oh my God, that makes total sense—Instagram really will count an accidental tap or auto-play preload as a “view,” especially when you’re scrolling fast. I’d just tell your friend to double-check the exact story time + whether it auto-played, because that’s usually the culprit.
